Pressure ulcers are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue, primarily caused by prolonged pressure on the skin. To treat and prevent this condition, Q Care provides different kinds of Anti-decubitus mattresses which can relieve the pressure that has already developed.
Our team developed the hardware and software of the Q Care pump system that automatically inflates and deflates the air mattress. The Smart Pump monitors and maintains the air pressure and automatically turns the system off when the required level is reached.
Client and Goals
Q Care is a Dutch organization specializing in wound and pressure ulcer care. They provide nationwide coverage and offer a wide range of anti-decubitus (AD) aids, such as mattresses and seat cushions, which are fully reimbursed by health insurers. Their team of specialized nurses ensures personal delivery and installation of these aids, both at home and in healthcare facilities. Additionally, Q Care has established a knowledge center that provides training and expertise in wound and pressure ulcer management.
Challenges
The integration of real-time monitoring required advanced sensor calibration and robust software algorithms to maintain consistent support levels. Balancing durability with lightweight design was crucial for ease of use in both home and clinical settings. Additionally, implementing an automatic shutoff feature demanded rigorous testing to guarantee reliability, preventing over- or under-inflation. Ensuring seamless communication between hardware and software while maintaining compliance with medical standards added another layer of complexity to the development process.

Our team designed and developed both the hardware and software for the Q Care Smart Pump system, an advanced solution for optimizing patient comfort and care. This intelligent pump automatically inflates and deflates the air mattress, ensuring consistent pressure relief for patients at risk of pressure ulcers. Equipped with smart monitoring technology, the system continuously adjusts air pressure in real-time, maintaining optimal support levels while reducing the need for manual adjustments. Once the desired pressure is reached, the pump automatically shuts off, enhancing energy efficiency and minimizing noise for a more comfortable patient experience.
